Hail and Snowflakes
Frozen Wonders from the Sky
Have you ever seen tiny ice crystals falling softly from the sky or heard loud ice balls hitting the ground during a storm? These are called snowflakes and hail—two amazing forms of frozen water! Even though they both come from clouds, they are very different.
Let’s explore these icy wonders together!
What is Hail?
Hail is a type of frozen rain that falls as hard, round balls of ice. It usually happens during strong thunderstorms.
Hail forms inside big storm clouds called Cumulonimbus clouds. Inside these clouds, powerful winds push water droplets high into the sky where it is very cold. The droplets freeze into ice and grow bigger as more layers form around them.
When the ice balls become too heavy, they fall to the ground as hailstones.
Some hailstones are tiny, while others can grow as big as a golf ball!
What are Snowflakes?
Snowflakes are soft, delicate ice crystals that fall gently when the weather is very cold.
They form when water vapor in the air freezes directly into ice. This process is called crystallization.
As snowflakes fall, they grow into beautiful patterns. The most amazing part?
No two snowflakes are exactly the same!
Hail vs Snowflakes
Even though both are made of ice, they are quite different:
Hail is hard and falls quickly during storms.
Snowflakes are soft and fall slowly in calm weather.
Hailstones are round, while snowflakes have unique crystal shapes.
Hail can sometimes damage crops, cars, and roofs because it falls fast and hard. Snowflakes, on the other hand, help cover the ground with snow, which keeps plants warm and provides water when it melts.
Fun Facts
Snowflakes usually have six sides.
Some hailstorms can produce very large hailstones!
Snow makes everything look like a magical winter wonderland.
Hail and snowflakes are both wonderful examples of how nature works in amazing ways. Whether it’s a noisy hailstorm or a peaceful snowfall, these frozen forms of water remind us how magical our weather can be!
