The Amazing Dead Sea!
Discover one of the saltiest places on Earth
Have you ever heard of a sea where people float without trying? A place so salty that fish can’t live in it? Welcome to the Dead Sea, one of the most magical places on our planet!
The Dead Sea is found between Israel and Jordan, in the Middle East. It sits in a very hot desert area and is actually the lowest place on Earth’s surface! The Dead Sea is 430 meters below sea level — the lowest land on Earth.
Why is it so salty?
The Dead Sea is a saltwater lake. Water flows into it from rivers, but it doesn’t flow out anywhere.
Because the weather is very hot, the water slowly evaporates, leaving the salt behind.
This makes the Dead Sea almost 10 times saltier than the ocean! Why do people float in the Dead Sea?
The extra salt makes the water very dense.
Just like how a ball floats in water, your body floats easily in the Dead Sea.
People love visiting just to feel like they’re floating on a giant cushion!
Why is it called the “Dead” Sea?
The water is so salty that plants and fish cannot survive in it.
Even though the sea itself has no life, the surrounding land is full of beautiful rocks, mountains, and desert plants.
The Dead Sea has famous mineral-rich mud.
Visitors cover themselves in it because it’s believed to make skin soft and healthy. Salt crystals sometimes form on rocks near the shore.
