Have you ever thought about what life would be like without the number zero? No 10, no 100, and no way to say “I have 0 toys left!” That might sound silly—but long ago, people didn’t even know zero existed!
Let’s go on a fun journey to discover how zero was invented and why it’s one of the most important numbers in the world!
🏺 A World Without Zero?
Thousands of years ago, people could count things like sheep or coins using numbers. But they didn’t have a way to show nothing. If a shopkeeper had no apples left, there was no number for that!
Imagine doing math like 10 – 10 without a zero to show the answer. Sounds confusing, right?
👳♂️ The Genius from Ancient India
Around 1,500 years ago, in ancient India, a brilliant man named Aryabhata was one of the first to talk about the idea of “nothing.” Later, another Indian mathematician named Brahmagupta made things even more awesome!
In the year 628 CE, Brahmagupta gave zero its very own symbol (a small circle) and showed how to use it in math, like adding and subtracting with zero.
So, India is where zero was born!
🌍 How Zero Traveled the World
After India, zero traveled to the Middle East, where Arabic scholars loved the idea. They called it “sifr”, which means "empty." Later, it reached Europe, where people finally started using zero in math and science.
This little number helped create modern math, computers, and even how we count money today!
✨ Why Zero Is a Hero
✅ It helps us count big numbers like 10, 100, and 1,000
✅ It shows when nothing is left
✅ It’s used in science, space, and computers
✅ It makes math complete!
The word “zero” comes from the Arabic word “sifr”, which also gave us the word “cipher” (a secret code!).
Zero may look like nothing, but it means everything to the world of numbers!
