The Magic of Primary Colours
Mix, Match, and Make New Colours!
Look around you. The sky is blue, apples can be red, and the sun looks bright yellow. Did you know that these three colours are the most important colours in the whole world of art? They are called primary colours — and they are full of magic!
What Makes a Colour “Primary”?
A primary colour is a colour that cannot be created by mixing any other colours.
No matter how hard you try, you can’t mix paints to make red, blue, or yellow. They are the starting point of all other colours. That’s why we call them primary — meaning “first” or “most important”.
The three primary colours are:
🔴 Red – the colour of fire trucks, strawberries, and roses
🔵 Blue – the colour of the sky, ocean, and rain
🟡 Yellow – the colour of sunshine, bananas, and stars
Together, they form the foundation of the colour world.
Colour Mixing – A Little Magic Trick
Now comes the fun part! When we mix two primary colours, something exciting happens — a new colour appears!
✨ Red + Yellow = Orange (like oranges and pumpkins)
✨ Blue + Yellow = Green (like leaves and grass)
✨ Red + Blue = Purple (like grapes and butterflies)
These newly created colours are called secondary colours.
It feels like magic, but it’s really science and art working together!
