A Special Gift of Friendship
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States. It was given in 1886 to celebrate 100 years of American independence and the strong friendship between the two countries.
The statue was designed by a talented French sculptor named Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The inside structure was built with the help of engineer Gustave Eiffel, the same person who designed the famous Eiffel Tower! The statue was built in France, then carefully taken apart into pieces, shipped across the ocean, and reassembled in America.

Broken Chains: At her feet are broken chains, which stand for breaking free from oppression and slavery.
