Have you ever looked at trees in autumn and wondered why their leaves suddenly turn yellow, orange, red, or brown? One day, a tree may be covered in bright green leaves, and a few weeks later, it can look like it is wearing a colorful coat!

As the green pigment disappears, other colors that were already hiding inside the leaves become easier to see.

Where Does Yellow and Orange Come From?
Some leaves turn yellow or golden.
But here’s a fun secret: yellow pigments may have been inside the leaf all along!
These pigments are called carotenoids. They help give many plants their yellow and yellow-orange colors.
During spring and summer, the green chlorophyll is so strong that it hides most of these colors.
When the chlorophyll disappears in autumn, the yellow, orange and golden colors are revealed.

What Makes Leaves Red?
Red leaves have a slightly different story.
Some trees produce red pigments called anthocyanins during autumn.
Scientists think these pigments may help protect leaves from certain stresses caused by sunlight and changing temperatures. They may also help trees manage nutrients before the leaves fall.
The amount of red color can depend on the weather.
Cool nights, sunny days, and certain conditions can encourage stronger red colors in some trees.

Why Do Leaves Turn Brown?
Not every leaf becomes bright yellow, orange, or red.
Some eventually turn brown.
As a leaf ages, many of its pigments break down. The leaf loses much of its green, yellow, and orange color, and it becomes brown and dry.
Eventually, the leaf may separate from the tree and fall to the ground.

Why Do Leaves Fall?
Trees don’t simply lose their leaves because they are “too old.”
For many trees, dropping leaves is a clever way to survive the colder months.
Leaves lose water through tiny openings called stomata. During cold or dry seasons, keeping lots of leaves can cost a tree valuable water and energy.
So the tree prepares for winter by closing down some of its leaf activities and eventually letting its leaves fall.
Before a leaf drops, the tree can move some useful nutrients from the leaf back into its branches and roots.
Then a special layer of cells develops where the leaf is attached to the branch.
Eventually, the leaf breaks away and floats to the ground.

What Happens to the Tree in Winter?
After losing its leaves, many trees enter a resting period called dormancy.
During this time, the tree’s growth slows down.
It may look quiet and sleepy, but it is still alive. Its roots remain underground, and the tree is waiting for warmer days and longer sunlight.
When spring arrives, new buds open and fresh green leaves appear.
The whole cycle begins again!

Nature has its own yearly calendar.
Do All Trees Change Color?
No! Not all trees lose their leaves in autumn.
Trees such as maples, oaks, birches, and many other deciduous trees often change color and lose their leaves.

Also, leaves don’t change color at exactly the same time everywhere.
The timing depends on things such as temperature, sunlight, rainfall, and the type of tree.
